In this Nineteenth Century description of Native American fiber techniques, William H. Holmes focused on early weaving methods discovered by looking at carefully detailed impressions left on pottery shards. The impressions showed the particulars of several fiber construction methods, and the text’s hand-drawn illustrations, done in pen and ink, provide incredible detail that make the techniques used very easy to understand. The modern reader will have to forgive descriptions like “savages” and “primitive” because they speak of an age and are belied by the incredible ingenuity and creativity of the Native American weavers
